Smoking Bans Everywhere – welcome to my world!

” They who can give up essential -liberty- to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

- Benjamin Franklin

I give up ~the Google alert was off the hook. This week, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has published a notice in the Federal Register that the agency intends to adopt a rule that would subject cigars to the regulations under the Family Smoking Prevention & Tobacco Control Act passed by Congress and which took effect in June 2009. What does that mean ~ flavored cigars are probably the target.

And then Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Friday night he will abide by the statewide smoking ban that went into effect 6 a.m. Saturday. The new law bans smoking in various public places, including Comerica Park. Good news, Camacho Cigar Bar inside the stadium’s Tiger Club will be among cigar bars and tobacco specialty shops that are exempt.

In Oakland County, MI – On the eve of the statewide smoking ban, the Oakland County Health Division has established a hot line to take complaints about smoking in public places. The Daily Tribune reports, Local health departments are charged with enforcing the statewide ban that takes effect at 6 a.m. today.

And last but not least – and a one two sucker punch, off the PRWeb for immediate release:

May 1, 2010 — Albany, New York April 30, 2010 – As part of his $620 million budget gap closing plan, Governor David Patterson of New York has proposed yet another tax increase on tobacco products which the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association says would jeopardize the business of every community tobacconist and cigar shop throughout the state. Under the Governor’s plan, the tobacco products tax on chewing tobacco, cigars, pipe tobacco and rolling tobacco would be increased from 46 percent of wholesale price to 90 percent of the wholesale price.

and that was just page 1 ~ I didn’t dare hit the next button!

    An alternative to smoking bans

If the public was honestly and truthfully informed about the effects of second-hand smoke, there would be fewer no-smoking laws in this country.

There has never been a single study showing that exposure to the low levels of smoke found in bars and restaurants with decent modern ventilation and filtration systems kills or harms anyone.

As to the annoyance of smoking, a compromise between smokers and non-smokers can be reached, through setting a quality standard and the use of modern ventilation technology.

Air ventilation can easily create a comfortable environment that removes not just passive smoke, but also and especially the potentially serious contaminants that are independent from smoking.

thank you Thomas – and that sir is a clear, well thought and reasonable solution. Trouble is, any reference to "reasonable and fair" seems to escape those on the other side – as though its safer for them to remain ignorant to our culture?

you see, I'm not advocating for allowing cigarette smoking in public places such as restaurants, playgrounds, malls etc… – but rather to keep the cigar bar and lounges separated from their anti-smoking campaigns. This may be requiring too much analysis and unrealistic expectation, but recognize that the cigar community is a unique faction outside of "big tobacco" – and yes, if any cigar smoker is offended by the second hand smoke in the lounge then "Air ventilation can easily create a comfortable environment " …

      thanks Thomas!
