There is a charming 1995 movie called “Smoke” that is set in a cigar store in NYC. Harvey Keitel plays Auggie, the proprietor. Auggie greets his customers by name, knows what they like, and gives his store a welcoming atmosphere.
In my experience, “Smoke” might as well be “Avatar” for its depiction of a fascinating, unreal world.
My relationship with the premier cigar store in my part of the world has been marked by ups and downs. When I first went in that store and told the owner I was interested in cigars, he quickly steered me over to a cigar he called “The best cigar there is.”
A glance at the other boxes revealed he had deposited me in front of the most expensive cigar in the store.
Fortunately, he had a daughter, “Catherine,” who not only smoked cigars but proved far more helpful in answering my questions and letting me find my way to the cigar I liked. So when “Catherine” was in the store, I bought cigars there. When the old man was there, I didn’t.
The old man retired, and his other daughter, “Margaret,” took over. I went in, selected my favorite cigar and asked “Margaret” which cigar was her favorite.
“I don’t smoke cigars,” she said, fixing me with an icy glare of disdain that I would even dare ask such a question.
Now, I know there are self-righteous non-smokers in the world. Heck, I used to be one myself. However, I never expected to find one owning a cigar store.
“Margaret” also improved the place by putting a bar code on each cigar. So the next time I picked up my favorite cigar, although the price tag read $4.50, it rang up at $6.00. Ah, progress.
How do your experiences compare? Do you have an Auggie or a “Margaret” to deal with?
