and they definitely don’t belong in the same ordinance….
Posted today on CRA’s blog by CRA Executive Director J. Glynn Loope, an alarming article which states “There is more trouble in Washington , DC , but this time it’s a few blocks from Capitol Hill. It’s in the Washington , DC City Council chambers.”The elite group of 5 city council members – including Marion Barry (one reader reminds us the same Marion Barry that was “busted for coke”) , Tommy Wells, Michael Brown, Yvette Alexander and Harry Thomas, have introduced an amendment to the Drug Paraphernalia Act of 1982, known as the “Single Sale of Cigar Products Prohibition Act of 2009.”
The draft proposed ordinance is to prevent the use of cigars as a means to marijuana use. You know, smoking a blunt – and defines cigar as “an individual cigar, cigar leaf wrapper, flavored or non flavored cigar that is referred to as a blunt, blunt wrap, or any other tobacco product that may be used in the ingesting, inhaling or introduction of marijuana to the human body.”
Wow….now I’ve heard everything! My view is simply this… I work hard for my money, and I am not a marijuana user, therefore using a cigar to “ingest marijuana” is so far off the beat and path for me – moreover my cigars cost me too much frickin’ money to mutilate, and the very thought causes me to shudder! Having said this, and according to CRA’s reporting, the draft ordinance makes no mention of price, size, hand-made, machine-made, or other defining characteristics of cigars. The article doesn’t give way to the scope of the ordinance other than media reports have said its intent is to ban sales at convenience stores and gas stations, there is no mention of them in the bill either. And because the law is not written to exclude the premium cigar, you best bet – we’re being grouped with that sorry bunch of drug users! In this wonderful world of zealots, and just causers, should this ordinance gain steam – expect this DC group of 5 to spread out, and more battles are sure to ensue as other counties and states prepare to follow suit.
And I thought all we had to do ladies was get in to the “Old Boy’s Club”, I didn’t think we had to fight for our very right to enjoy our culture without being labeled and other demeaning actions thrown at us – I thought all that nonsense would stop once we got in!
