Apples and Oranges

Does anyone else get annoyed (maybe annoyed is too mild a word) when they see all "smokers" lumped together? It's as if lawmakers and the general, uninformed public see no difference between a cigar and a cigarette. No difference? You mean, aside from the inhale vs/ don't inhale issue? Or aside from the SIGNIFICANT differences in construction materials? All tobacco vs/ paper-wrapped and chemical soaked? No difference besides those? The sheer artistic skill that goes into blending and rolling a premium cigar vs factory mass production?

How about the differences in mindset? The difference between an addiction and a hobby? How about the difference between sucking down a cigarette for a quick nicotine fix, and deliberately scheduling quiet time to relax and properly appreciate a good cigar?

Grrrrrrrr.

When's the last time you heard a cigarette smoker say, "Hmmm. I think kool-ade would work better here - this Pabst Blue Ribbon just doesn't complement the fruity undertones of a Marlboro light." Or, "I've HAD ITwith this weather - I haven't had a cigarette in 2 weeks since this cold front moved in!"

Do you think there has ever been a conversation that went something like, "It's our anniversary next week - 30 years! I've got a special Virginia Slims that I've had napping in the sock drawer for 5 months -I think it's going up in smoke tonight!" Does anyone really hand out "It's a Girl" Winston-Salem's?

Ever heard or read a debate about cigarette/drink pairings? Read any tasting reviews on a Camel? Ever seen a cigar smoker leave his table in a restaurant for a quick nicotine fix? Ever seen a cigarette smoker stick her nose in the pack and just take a deep breath - like savoring that wonderful smell when you open your humi?

How about marketing mindsets? Have you ever seen cigar marketing that was predatory - clearly aimed at kids? Have you ever seen a teenager trying to get someone to hook him up with a Fuente and some Single Malt?

All things are NOT equal! It drives me completely CRACKERS to read anti-tobacco propoganda that attacks cigar smoking using arguments that only apply to cigarette smoking!

It's Apples and Oranges, people!
